OVERVIEW

I am a big fan of street performances and would like to continue to see the street performing culture thriving in our life in my town, San Francisco. However, I notice that it’s hard to know where and when artists will perform. Also, because many people don’t carry cash anymore, even if fans want to support the artist, all they can give is applause. I want to build a mobile application that helps buskers attract more fans. I also want to make a secure payment system for fans to support artists and enjoy a variety of street performances.

RESEARCH

Cashless society

According to a survey of 2,000 American adults by the credit card company Capital One, 1 in 4 participants most often go cashless. For millennial participants (ages 20-40), the number jumped to a third not carrying cash. Survey also found that millennials were more likely to say paying with cash "inconvenient". This survey clearly demonstrates the shifting trends of payment method preference.

Most surveyed said they keep about less than $25 of cash on hand at all times. During the survey, participants' wallets were also surveyed and it revealed that 1 in 6 participants had no cash at all, while 2 in 5 had less than $10 on them. 

San Francisco tourism growth

SF Travel Association estimates a continuous increase in the total number of San Francisco visitors in 2018. According to the survey conducted by the SF Travel Association with 4,000 participants, ‘more than one in four people surveyed traveled specifically to visit a garden or park, watch a live music performance and attend a festival or special event.

Pros:

  • Users can see which artists are performing by using the "Live Now!" feature.

  • Onboarding pages for users to learn about the app

Cons:

  • The app is currently not functioning.

  • Two menu locations with different functionalities confuse users.

Olivia is a freelance musician in San Francisco. She plays music at the live music stages in San Francisco and does the busking to make extra income and practice simultaneously.

GOALS
  • She would like to increase her monthly income.

  • She would like to promote her performance.

FRUSTRATIONS
  • She does not make enough money.

  • She does not know how to promote her future performance.

ARCHITECTURE

Buskers:

Buskit mobile application lets busker users have real-time performing location and crowd volume information. Furthermore, busker users can promote their skills by uploading photos, videos, and media links to have more followers (fans) and possible performing opportunities. There is an artist community feature, where buskers can communicate and exchange information and form a band group to perform together.

With the Buskit mobile application, fans can make a direct donation to artists they support. Also, they can use this App to locate street artists in real-time

REFLECTION

Before I started this project, I thought a cashless society only has positive impacts for everyone, not realizing that some people rely on physical currency. This project broadened my perspective towards things I believed were good and bad.
